Angry crowd bashes BMW after Miami Beach crash

- By Doug Phillips Staff writer

When the cellphone video starts, a black BMW that has just been in a crash is being kicked and pummeled — on the driver’s side — by two men wearing dark-colored hoodies.

As other onlookers with cellphone cameras in hand close in, a blonde-haired woman in a green outfit, who doesn’t seem to be wearing shoes, begins kicking the front passenger’s side window. The window eventually shatters.

The nearly three-minute video was posted on the Facebook page called the South Beach Sludge Report, which is run by South Beach hotel owner Mitch Novick who has long been after Miami Beach city commissioners to pass ordinances meant to calm down the mayhem that sometimes overtakes the neighborhood.

The crash happened about 5 a.m. Saturday along the 200 block of Espanola Way when the BMW was involved in a crash with two other cars and the driver would not get out, WPLG-Ch. 10 reported.

When police arrived, the driver of the BMW — Dwight Silvera, 24 — failed a field sobriety test and was charged with driving under the influence, according to The Miami Herald.

According to the arrest report, Silvera’s breath tests registered .13 and .14, well above Florida’s legal limit of .08, WTVJCh. 6 reported.

“It’s time for the Mayor and Commission to immediately roll back closing time throughout the entertainment district to 2am!,” Novick wrote in the Facbook post that shows the beatdown video.

In November, about 64 percent of voters in Miami Beach rejected a proposal to restrict alcohol sales to 2 a.m. on the popular tourist strip.

“Spring Break is around the corner! This message should be loud and clear,” Novick said in his post.
