Miami pug a part of game

We don’t have a team in the Super Bowl, but there will be a South Florida rooting interest on Super Sunday.

Miami-Dade County Pet Adoption and Protection Center will have a pug named Carlo Carlino competing on Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XIV on Feb. 4.

The dog, along with dozens of other adoptable puppies from shelters and rescues nationwide, will be featured on the annual telecast, which starts at 3 p.m., a few hours before the big game.

The dogs traveled to Animal Planet’s New York City studios to tape the program, which is modeled (slightly) after the Super Bowl but with furry fourlegged friends.

The dogs are placed in two teams — “Team Ruff ” vs. “Team Fluff ” — as they storm the faux gridiron where they try to score touchdowns but often fumble. Basically, the puppies sniff, play and hang out on the gridiron in giant cute fest to draw viewers.

Last year’s program fetched 2.5 million total viewers, according to the cable network.

The winning dog gets he “Lombarky” trophy. And all the dogs win in a way because they get TV exposure and a chance to be adopted.

According to the Miami-Dade shelter, Carlo Carlino is a purebred pug that is “energetic, fun-loving, sweet, very affectionate and sometimes a bit willful.”

His previous owner brought him to the shelter because he couldn’t provide the attention the puppy needed. At the shelter, the pup was named Carlo Carlino. (Carlino is the Spanish word for pug so his name translates as Carlo the pug.) The dog is 8-months old.
