No shakeup to minor league coaching staffs
In an offseason of change for the Miami Marlins — from ownership to the major league roster to, perhaps, signature outfield features — one area has remained remarkably consistent: minor league managers.
The Marlins announced Friday their 2018 minor league coaching staffs, and all seven affiliates are led by the same managers who were in those roles in 2017.
Arnie Beyeler is back with the Triple-A New Orleans Baby Cakes, while Randy Ready remains with the Double-A Jumbo Shrimp.
The same is true for the three Single-A levels: Kevin Randel with the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads, Todd Pratt with the Low-A Greensboro Grasshoppers and Mike Jacobs with the short-season A Batavia Muckdogs.
John Pachot will manage the GCL Marlins, Ray Nunez the DSL Marlins.
Two Marlins affiliates — Ready’s Jacksonville squad and Pratt’s Greensboro group — made the playoffs in 2017.
Miami’s roving coordinator ranks do not feature the same continuity. Jacksonville In the farm system’s first year under Gary Denbo, the team’s vice president of player development and scouting and a longtime mentor to/friend of CEO Derek Jeter, there are several new names.
Sean Berry (hitting coordinator), Chris Michalak (pitching coordinator) and Quinton McCracken (outfield and baserunning coordinator) will be in their first years in those positions. Jorge Hernandez (infield coordinator) and Paul Phillips (catching coordinator) are holdovers from the previous leadership.
Berry, Michalak and McCracken are all former big leaguers. McCracken was most recently the Astros’ director of player personnel — and a key cog in their front office for most of a rebuild that culminated in a World Series championship in October — but he and the team said in August they mutually decided to part ways.
Also of note, the new GCL athletic trainer is Melissa Hampton, the first woman to work for the Marlins on a field staff at any level.
