I believe the arguments for and against Fort Lauderdale’s Wave streetcar miss the point that the Wave is much more than just a transportation project. When Tampa built its own trolley to connect downtown with Ybor City, existing real estate values along the route soared, Ybor City was rejuvenated, and new jobs were created. Fort Lauderdale is a tourist destination, and the Wave offers much more than just transportation for locals.

For example, while San Francisco has its cable cars, it also restores vintage trolleys from around the world and operates them downtown primarily for the tourist trade. The Wave route could also serve this purpose, and by charging a premium fare could offset part of the cost of building the storage yard for the trolley fleet. SunSentinel.com/ opinion/letters
