Bikes, pedestrian­s may block roads

Miami Dolphins’ Cancer Challenge takes place today

Thousands of bicycles and pedestrian­s will be taking over many roads between Boca Raton and Miami today for the annual Miami Dolphins’ Cancer Challenge.

Law enforcemen­t agencies will help direct traffic along a combined 226 miles of roadways for five separate rides that will converge at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

There will be lots of detours and closed traffic lanes along the routes beginning as early as 5 a.m., when riders assemble at the starting points.

The 100-mile Hurricane Hundred will start and end at Hard Rock Stadium with a route that begins at 6 a.m., south on Northwest 37th Avenue to the University of Miami, east on Interstate 395, north on Collins Avenue, Ocean Drive and State Road A1A to Hugh Taylor Birch state park in Fort Lauderdale, west on Las Olas Boulevard and State Road 84, south on Pine Island Road and Northwest 47th Avenue, and east on Northwest 199th Street to the stadium.

The 52-mile Boca Ride will start at 7:30 a.m. at Florida Atlantic University. It will go east along Spanish River Boulevard, south along State Road A1A, west on Las Olas Boulevard and State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale, south on Pine Island Road and Northwest 47th Avenue, and east on Northwest 199th Street to the stadium.

The 35-mile Miami Ride will start at 8 a.m. at the University of Miami campus and head northeast on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Bayshore Drive and South Miami Avenue, east on I-395, north on Collins Avenue, west on Northeast 95th, 96th 123rd, 125th and 127th streets, and north on Northwest 22nd and 32nd avenues to the stadium.

The 25-mile Fort Lauderdale Ride will start at 9:15 a.m. at Esplanade Park. It will go south on Southwest Fourth Avenue and State Road 84, south on Davie Road, west on Southwest 39th and 30th streets, south on Pine Island Road and Northwest 47th Avenue, and east on Northwest 199th Street to the stadium.

The 14-mile Dolphins Ride will start at 10 a.m. at the team’s training facility at Nova Southeaste­rn University in Davie and follow the same path west on Southwest 30th Street, south on Pine Island Road and Northwest 47th Avenue, and east on Northwest 199th Street to the stadium.

Partial lane closures will impact these roads, especially the heavily traveled Northwest 199th Street, State Road 84, Pine Island Road, State Road A1A, the MacArthur Causeway, Federal Highway, and Florida’s Turnpike ramp from westbound Interstate 595.
