Ex-Suncoast coach May takes OC job at Georgia school

- By Wells Dusenbury Staff writer

After stepping down as Suncoast’s football coach in January, Bobby May will be heading to Georgia.

May, who led the Chargers to their best season in 13 years, has been hired as the offensive coordinator at Westlake High School — the alma mater of NFL star quarterback Cam Newton. Located in Atlanta, Westlake is led by former Coconut Creek coach Kareem Reid, who just finished his second season at the school.

“I chose Westlake over other positions because they have a family feel, they have coach who wants to do what it takes to win, but more importantly, they put the kids first,” May said.

“The school has a strong football tradition, and as offensive coordinator I plan to build on that success and help take the program to the next level.”

May added that the lower cost of living and having family nearby helped contribute to his decision. After stepping down in January, May said he was “looking for a better opportunity to move to a state where teachers and coaches are appreciated.”

May will be back in South Florida briefly during the 2018 season as the Lions travel to Broward County on Sept. 8 Beach.

A former Dwyer tight end, May spent two seasons as the Chargers head coach, finishing with a 10-9 record. One of the area’s toughest coaching jobs due to the school’s strict academic requirements, Suncoast went 4-6 and captured a district title in his first season.

The Chargers built on that success this past year as the team notched its first winning record since 2004, finishing 6-3. The highlight of the season came in Week 7 when Suncoast hammered previously unbeaten Cardinal Newman 34-0. Suncoast ended the season as district runner-up to Fort Pierce Westwood, but narrowly missed out on the postseason under the FHSAA’s revamped playoff system.

A Concordia alum, May had prior assistant coaching stints at Palm Beach Lakes, Palm Beach Gardens and Robert Morris. He also led Suncoast’s boys lacrosse team as well.

During his tenure at Suncoast, May had two assistants under him land head coaching jobs – Mario Jackson (Berean Christian) and Matthew VanDusen (Westland Hialeah). to face Deerfield
