GoFundMe accounts multiply

- By Ron Hurtibise Staff writer

In the aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on Wednesday, the “official” GoFundMe campaign by the Broward Education Foundation has raised more than $1 million from 16,517 donors.

Meanwhile, almost 50 additional campaigns have raised $376,600 from nearly 6,300 donors for a wide range of beneficiaries affected.

Organizers of the campaigns come from South Florida and across the country. Some are raising funds for families mourning their loved ones.

Some are raising funds for the general benefit of victims and their families. And some say funds raised will be earmarked for memorials or scholarships to help surviving students move forward.

GoFundMe is guaranteeing none of the money donated will be misused.

“GoFundMe is working closely with all parties, including the state and local officials in Florida, to ensure all of the money raised goes to victims and families,” said Katherine Cichy, a GoFundMe spokeswoman.

Immediately after the shootings on Wednesday, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said she was working with the crowdfunding site to make sure would-be scammers wouldn’t be able to create fraudulent campaigns.

Several campaigns were deleted, and GoFundMe directed donors to give money to the official campaign created by the education foundation.

By Friday, 16 additional campaigns had been vetted and added to a central hub page at Gofundme.com/ cause/stoneman-douglas, Cichy said, adding that the vetting is ongoing.

“The hub is updated on a regular basis with new campaigns that have been verified,” she said. “We have multiple processes to secure the platform.”

A campaign for the family of assistant football coach Aaron Feis, who died shielding students, was started by the Douglas Gridiron Club, the official booster club of the school’s football program, and had raised more than $100,000 from more than 1,700 people by Friday evening.

Max Schachter, father of slain freshman Alex Schachter, organized a campaign he said would be used to create a scholarship “to help other students experience the joys of music as well as fund increased security at schools.” It had raised $66,559 from 928 donors by late Friday.

A memorial fund for Meadow Pollack, set up by Marc Grossmann, raised $45,070 from 690 donors by Friday evening. Grossmann identified himself as the brother of the best friend of Pollack’s mother, Shara Kaplan. “We hope to have enough money to help Meadow’s mom Shara, a single mom, get the help and long-term counseling she will need.”

A Marietta, Ga., man, Robert Meaders, organized a campaign for a former Marietta High School classmate Missy Cantrell Wilford, whose daughter Maddy is recovering from wounds suffered in the attack.

“I’ve known Missy for over 30 years and while she’s now in Florida and I remain in Marietta, the family ties that are so much a part of Marietta City Schools run strong,” Meaders wrote.

He added, “Maddy’s road to recovery will be arduous for her and her mother.”

Here are the top-generating campaigns that GoFundMe had vetted and added to its Stoneman Douglas High School hub page by Friday evening:
