In wake of shooting, playoff game will be made up next week

In the immediate aftermath of Wednesday’s school shooting at Douglas, the last thing on anyone’s mind was the status of the girls basketball team’s playoff game that was slated to tip off just over 24 hours after the terror that claimed the lives of 17 people in Parkland.

Maddy Wilford — a junior on the basketball team — was shot several times in the attack and is currently in the hospital.

The Eagles’ Class 9A regional quarterfinal at Cypress Bay was quickly postponed, and the Parkland school has been closed since the tragedy.

With second-round contests slated to be played on Tuesday, rescheduling the game became a tricky proposal in order to sync it up with the rest of the postseason.

On Friday, the Florida High School Athletic Association and BCAA assembled a plan to make up the lost contest.

Stoneman Douglas will resume play on Thursday as it travels to Cypress Bay for its Class 9A regional quarterfinal. The winner of the contest will face Deerfield Beach, who advanced last night, in the regional semifinals just two days later on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The regional final game would then be played on Tuesday, Feb 27. The 9A state semifinal is set for Friday, March 2.

FHSAA spokesperson Kyle Niblett thanked Broward County Athletic Association president Rocky Gillis “for working so diligently with us.”

Stoneman Douglas ended the regular season and district play with a record of 15-7. The Eagles defeated Cypress Bay 54-51 on Nov. 27.
