Shockers end Cincinnati streak

-

Landry Shamut scored 19 points, and No. 19 Wichita State ended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak, beating No. 5 Cincinnati 76-72 on Sunday.

The Shockers (21-5, 11-3 American Athletic) beat a Top 5 team on the road for the first time since 1964. They led most of the way, building an 11-point lead midway through the second half and holding on. Shaquille Morris’ dunk with 5 seconds left finished it off.

The Bearcats (23-4, 12-2) had their 39-game homecourt winning streak snapped.

Cincinnati and Wichita State were expected to contend for the title in the Shockers’ first season in the AAC. Wichita State gave itself a chance with a solid all-around game led by Shamut.

Wichita State closes the regular season by hosting Cincinnati on March 4. Houston (21-5, 11-3) also is in the running for the league title.

Jordan Poole scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half to help No. 22 Michigan take the lead, and it never trailed in the second half en route to a 74-62 home victory over No. 8 Ohio State. The Wolverines (22-7, 11-5 Big Ten) helped out rival Michigan State, giving the secondranked Spartans a onegame lead atop the conference standings with two games left in the regular season. The Buckeyes fell to 22-7, 13-3 . ... Gary Trent Jr. hit three foul shots with 1:31 left to put No. 12 Duke ahead for good and the Blue Devils (22-5, 10-4 ACC) beat No. 11 Clemson 66-57. It was the first home loss for the Tigers (20-6, 9-5).

Less than a week after announcing he would step down at the end of the season, Mississippi coach Andy Kennedy resigned effective immediately.

Assistant Tony Madlock will serve as the acting head coach the rest of the season.

“It has become readily apparent to me that my continued presence as the head coach is proving detrimental to these players finishing the season in a fashion that is representative of the standard for this program,” Kennedy, the winningest coach in program history, said in a statement.
