New general manager, editor to oversee Sun Sentinel
Two veteran publishing executives have been appointed general manager and editor-in-chief of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, where they will spearhead the company’s plans to expand digital access to news and feature content among thousands of subscribers in South Florida.
Nancy Meyer, a former publisher of the Hartford Courant and the Orlando Sentinel, is rejoining the Sun Sentinel’s parent company, tronc, as general manager for the southeast. Meyer returns to Florida after serving as president of the North Jersey Media Group, which is part of the USA Today Network.
“I’m thrilled to be coming to the Sun Sentinel and rejoining tronc, especially in a time of such change,” Meyer said. “So much has been done, but the reader and the advertiser expect us to move much more quickly. At the same time, that connection with our reader and our advertiser starts with our core journalism. I really do believe that is the key to all we do.”
Based in South Florida, Meyer will oversee Chicago-based tronc’s operations in South Florida, Orlando and Newport News, Va. She is expected to start in her new post on March 5.
“Nancy has a proven track record of revenue growth and a commitment to quality journalism that benefits the communities we service,” said Tim Knight, president of tronc.
Julie Anderson, who has been senior vice president of Content and Business Development for the Orlando Sentinel Media Group, is also moving to South Florida to become editor-in-chief of the Sun Sentinel. She is set to start Thursday.
“I have tremendous respect for the Sun Sentinel’s newsroom and look forward to joining the team. It has a history of journalism excellence, and it is proving once again in these last few weeks how crucial the newsroom’s role is in reporting the stories that affect South Florida,” Anderson said. “My job is to help the newsroom expand its story-telling capabilities in new ways and to grow our audience while building on the legacy of my predecessors. I look forward to joining the South Florida community later this week.”
Anderson has been “a leader in driving digital change and is very involved in assisting with the development of our newsroom transformation blueprint,” Knight said. “She knows the South Florida market well and will help continue the Sun Sentinel’s tradition of delivering excellent journalism to its residents.”
Howard Saltz, who served as editor-in-chief of the Sun Sentinel since 2011 and added the role of publisher to his duties in 2016, is departing the company on Wednesday. In 2013, the Sun Sentinel won a Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service for a probe into speeding by off-duty law enforcement officers in South Florida.
