Virginia Tech shocks No. 5 Duke

Chris Clarke tipped in a shot with 4 seconds left Monday night, and Virginia Tech stunned No. 5 Duke 64-63 in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hokies (21-9, 10-7 ACC) trailed for most of the game before Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s jumper sailed over the rim and Clarke laid it in.

Alexander-Walker led the Hokies with 17 points.

Grayson Allen led Duke (24-6, 12-5) with 22 points,.

Eustachy to step down:

Larry Eustachy has agreed to step down as coach at Colorado State, ending a “climate assessment” of the program led by athletic director Joe Parker.

Eustachy agreed to resign and amend his contract, which will now pay him $750,000 in three installments over the next two years. He’ll be on paid leave until June 30, at which time he’ll formally resign, the university announced Monday in Fort Collins, Colo.

Eustachy’s decision to resign and amend his contract means there will be no conclusions or recommendations associated with Parker’s investigation into Eustachy’s behavior and interactions with players and staff, the school said. Parker has not said what prompted the investigation.

Coach arrested: San Diego placed coach Lamont Smith on indefinite administrative leave a day after he was arrested in Oakland on suspicion of domestic violence.

Assistant coach Sam Scholl was appointed acting coach for the postseason.

Bridges explanation:

Michigan State said its compliance office discovered that Miles Bridges’ family had dinner with an agent last winter without his knowledge, committing an NCAA violation.

The school said the finding Friday made Bridges ineligible, leading it to apply for reinstatement, which was granted the next day by the NCAA. Xavier up to No. 3: Virginia firmed up its No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25, No. 3 Xavier has the program’s highest ranking and Villanova dropped to No. 4 after losing to unranked Creighton. Michigan State remained No. 2. Xavier moved up a spot after beating Georgetown in its only game last week.
