Ticket alert: Magician David Blaine in Miami

- By Ben Crandell Staff writer bcrandell@sun-sentinel .com

Death-defying magician David Blaine will perform at Miami’s Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on June 8, part of a springsummer tour stopping in 36 cities in North America.

Tickets for the show, produced by Live Nation, are scheduled to go on sale at noon Friday at ArshtCenter.org.

His one-man, interactive fusion of magic and stunt work has awed audiences since the then 23-year-old Blaine’s first TV special, “Street Magic,” two decades ago. The Brooklyn-based performer’s streetwise approach enticed modern audiences with the daring possibilities of the art form beyond rabbits and hats.

The New Yorker magazine said that Blaine “saved magic,” while influential radio host Howard Stern has described him as the greatest magician who has ever lived.

Among his most memorable performances, Blaine has been buried alive for a week; spent three days encased in a 6-ton block of ice; stood atop a 100-foot pillar in New York’s Bryant Park for 36 hours, with no safety net; stood for 72 hours surrounded by 1 million volts of electricity; and spent a week submerged in a water-filled sphere at Lincoln Center, which he followed with a world record by holding his breath for more than 17 minutes during a live telecast of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Blaine also will perform on June 11 at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando.
