FAU’s Singletary, Kiffin to be honored
BOCA RATON The recognition continues to pour in for Florida Atlantic football coach Lane Kiffin and running back Devin “Motor” Singletary.
Both will be honored by the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame March 25 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Kiffin was chosen as Coach of the Year, while Singletary is among the three finalists for Amateur Athlete of the Year. Former Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and golfer Alexa Pano are the others.
In his first season, Kiffin led the Owls to an 11-3 record, their first Conference USA title and a victory against Akron in the Boca Raton Bowl. The eight-win improvement from last year was the second biggest turnaround at the Division I-A level, trailing only Fresno State. The achievement came after the program endured three consecutive 3-9 seasons.
Much of the success could be attributed to Singletary, who ran for a school-record 1,920 yards as a sophomore and led the nation with 32 total touchdowns. He was named Third-Team All-American by The Associated Press, becoming the first FAU player to earn the honor. He also was named the Conference USA’s Most Valuable Player.
In just two seasons, Singletary already holds the school record for most touchdowns (43) and is just 589 yards shy of the career rushing mark.
