iPic, a theater that offers moviegoers reserved online seating, recliners, pillows and blankets, plans to open in 2020 at 601 N. Federal Highway, between Broward and Sunrise boulevards in Fort Lauderdale.

The movies are coming to downtown Fort Lauderdale.

iPic, a theater that offers moviegoers reclining seats, pillows and blankets, said it plans to open a location at 601 N. Federal Highway, between Broward and Sunrise boulevards.

The new theater, which offers reserved seating online, is scheduled to open by fall 2020.

South Florida has iPic theaters in Boca Raton and North Miami Beach. The company also has two locations under construction in downtown Delray Beach (expected to open in 2019) and at the Metropica development in Sunrise (expected to open in 2020), spokeswoman Michelle Soudry said.

The company has signed an agreement to build an eight-screen, 400-seat luxury movie theater — along with a City Perch Kitchen + Bar and a 4,200-square-foot rooftop bar and lounge — in Barron Real Estate’s mixed-use development on Federal Highway. City Perch will be designed by Sherry Yard, chief operating officer for iPic Entertainment.

The Barron’s development also will include up to 180 luxury apartments.

“With the addition of thousands of units currently under construction, downtown Fort Lauderdale will continue to evolve into a more vibrant and true live, work, play destination,” said iPic Entertainment CEO and founder Hamid Hashemi, who resides in Fort Lauderdale.

Charles Ladd, president of Barron Real Estate, said he expects to submit a city site plan in 90 days and begin construction on the $100 million multiuse project in the fall.

Currently, the closest movie theaters to downtown Fort Lauderdale are the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater on Southwest Second Street, The Classic Gateway Theatre on Sunrise Boulevard and Savor Cinema on Southeast Sixth Street.

Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Boca Raton, iPic Entertainment operates 15 locations with 115 screens in Florida, Arizona, California, New Jersey, New York, Texas and Washington.

As a movie theater, iPic is pricier than most, if ticket-buyers want the luxury experience. For example, Premium Plus seats for two cost $58 for the new movie, “A Wrinkle In Time” at the Boca Raton theater, while two tickets in reserved seating at competing theaters in the area cost between $31 and $38. But iPic says members receive a discount on tickets and other perks.
