Men bash SUV with hammer after driver attempts to flee scene

A spectacle that played out on Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard on Sunday quickly made its way to social media as bystanders chased and pummeled an SUV that was believed to be fleeing a hit-run crash scene.

The driver of the SUV, a man from Aventura, was later be arrested, records show.

The wild incident began when the driver of a silver Infiniti SUV going north on Biscayne Boulevard crossed the median into oncoming traffic and hit a southbound vehicle near Northeast 34th Street and crashed into two more vehicles at Northeast 36th Street, WPLG-Ch. 10 reported.

With its front grille and a side quarter panel dangling — and its wipers haplessly flapping across a dry windshield — cellphone video shows the SUV apparently trying to leave the scene.

In one video a man can be heard shouting, “He’s leaving, he’s leaving.”

The images show several people running after the Infiniti, trying to box it in.

Then, a man wearing a dark shirt, khaki cargo shorts and black shoes involved. with white socks gets out of a car and uses a sledgehamm­er or mallet to smash the SUV’s windows.

As the SUV keeps going, another man yanks on one of the vehicle’s door handles — pulling it off.

Eventually, as the Infiniti starts going west on Northwest 36th Street, another vehicle is seen blocking its path.

Miami police arrested Maxwell Oleg Lagutenko, 25, in connection with the incident.

Records show he was booked into jail Sunday night on charges of reckless driving, leaving the the scene of an accident and fleeing or eluding police.

When officers found Lagutenko, a police report said he seemed “to be high on narcotics,” WTVJ-Ch. 6 reported.
