Cardinals starter: RHP Matt Bowman Broadcast: 940-AM

Tuesday’s game: In an 8-3 loss to the Nationals, rookie Lewis Brinson, getting a look in the leadoff spot, opened the game with a home run off Stephen Strasburg at Fitteam Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. But afterward he lamented twice failing to drive in runners from third base with less than two outs. In both cases, he hit grounders that led to runners being thrown out at home. “After the home run I wasn’t too happy with those ground balls. I want to get those runs in,” said Brinson, who felt better about his initial at-bat against Strasburg. “Especially off a curveball, it feels good to get one off a guy like that.” ... Right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne, vying for a spot in the rotation, faltered after a strong start, allowing four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. The native of Havana, Cuba, didn’t allow a hit until Matt Reynolds smacked an opposite-field single with one out in the fifth. He struggled to complete that inning, though, giving up two runs and three hits. Despaigne lost the lead in the sixth on a two-run homer to center by Bryce Harper . ... Derek Dietrich was 3-for-4 to raise his average to .381 . ... Justin Bour beat the shift by knocking a run-scoring single through the vacated shortstop spot.
