Miramar native Derulo to sing national anthem
JUPITER — Miramar native Jason Derulo will add more local flavor to the Marlins’ Opening Day by singing the national anthem Thursday before the game against the Chicago Cubs.
Born Jason Joel Desrouleaux to Haitian parents, Derulo became known for his double-Platinum hit, “Whatcha Say” and has generated more than 9 billion audio streams. His breakout single “Talk Dirty” (featuring 2 Chainz) has reached seven-times platinum status, while “Want To Want Me” and “Wiggle” (featuring Snoop Dogg) went quadruple-platinum.
The anthem will cap pregame festivities for the Marlins’ opener beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday that features a performance by Miami’s DJ Khaled and Poo Bear.
Derulos latest single “Colors” is an inspiring anthem that unites fans and their favorite artists around the globe and serves as the CocaCola song for the 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign.
“Through my years of travel, I’ve been able to see the beauty in our cultural differences, and I wrote ‘Colors’ to celebrate that diversity and be a part of the amazing energy that sports fans around the world give to their teams,” he said in a news release.
The Marlins and Cubs will begin the first game of the Major League Baseball season with Jose Urena throwing the first pitch at 12:40 p.m.
The Marlins will have Coral Springs High product Lewis Brinson starting in center field while All-Star Anthony Rizzo, who played for Majory Stoneman Douglas High, will be for the Cubs.
Derulo wrote his first song at age 8. By his teenage years he had begun composing tracks for artists including Lil Wayne, Pitbull, and Pleasure P. He also co-wrote “Bossy” for New Orleansbased rapper Birdman, and made a guest appearance on the song, highlighting his ability as a vocalist.
At 28, Derulo has a variety of commercial endeavors. He was a featured performer for the “Monday Night Football” theme, launched a clothing line LVL XIII in Bloomingdales last fall and has a label in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music.
He is also an investor in a number of enterprises, including Catch L.A. and Rumble Boxing with Sylvester Stallone and Ashton Kutcher. at first base
