Ex-UM QB reunited with college coach

Ken Dorsey and Butch Davis are back together in college athletics in Miami — just not the school you remember them from.

FIU announced the hiring of Dorsey, the winningest quarterback in Miami Hurricanes history, as assistant athletic director on Monday in a move that reunites him with Davis, whom he played under through his sophomore season at UM in 2000.

“I am super excited that Ken Dorsey is going to be a part of our athletic department,” Davis said in a statement released by Florida International. “He brings class, integrity and great knowledge of what it’s like being around championship programs. He’s well respected throughout the NFL. He’ll be a great addition to our athletic department.” The 2000 season, Davis’ last coaching UM and Dorsey’s first as starting quarterback, marked a Hurricanes resurgence back to the nationally relevant teams that won four national titles from 1983-91. Miami finished 11-1 and No. 2 in the final AP poll.

Davis took an NFL head coaching job with the Browns that offseason, but Dorsey went on to have back-to-back Heisman Trophy finalist seasons as a junior and senior. Under Larry Coker in 2001, Dorsey led the Hurricanes to an undefeated national championship season, and in 2002, back to the BCS National Championship Game, a loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

It was a 34-game win streak Dorsey, who was 38-2 at UM, spearheaded between an early loss to Washington in 2000 and that Fiesta Bowl.

Dorsey set numerous school records and still ranks as the all-time leader 86 touchdown passes, while his 9,565 passing yards rank second in school history.

Dorsey, who played in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns, has spent the past five seasons as quarterbacks coach with the Carolina Panthers.

FIU went 8-5 in 2017, Davis’ first as head coach with the Panthers.

Dorsey will officially start at FIU in April, according to a press release.
