Gordon takes job at University School

Kevin Gordon, the reigning Broward County small schools girls basketball Coach of the Year, is going from Cardinal Gibbons to University School.

The school announced Gordon would be stepping down on Monday morning “to pursue other opportunities.” He later told the Sun Sentinel he would be coaching at University School.

“I got another opportunity. It had nothing to do with Gibbons; it’s just me — an opportunity to grow,” Gordon said. “It’s an upand-coming program. We’ve got to build it like we did at Gibbons.”

Gordon led the Chiefs to three consecutive trips to the state final four as district and regional champs. He accumulated a record of 176-77 over 10 years. In his final season at Gibbons, he went 22-7.

“Three straight trips to Lakeland is quite a legacy!” Gibbons athletic director Michael Morrill said in a statement. “Coach Gordon poured his heart and soul into our girls’ program. He was a tireless worker and elevated the girls’ performance to great heights.”

Last year, the Sharks went 10-6 and missed regionals, going out in district semifinals.

“They’re a team that’s young. They have a middle school, so I’ll be overseeing the whole program,” Gordon said. “Everything takes time.”

The University School boys are coming off a Class 5A state championship, the school’s first, and will continue playing in nationals this week at GEICO Nationals in New York. The Sharks tip off in quarterfinals against Phoenix’s Shadow Mountain at noon on Thursday from Christ the King High in Queens in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.

Both basketball coaches at Gibbons have now stepped down in the last 10 days after Marty Seidlin moved on from leading the boys on March 16.
