QB Brandon Doughty waived

- By Omar Kelly Staff writer

The Miami Dolphins have waived quarterback Brandon Doughty in a move that indicates that the franchise is searching for a developmental quarterback with more upside.

Doughty, a seventhround pick in the 2016 draft, spent the past two seasons on Miami’s practice squad. In the two instances where the Dolphins had a chance to call Doughty up, putting him on the 53-man roster, they chose to go with another quarterback.

In 2016 the Dolphins signed T.J. Yates after Ryan Tannehill suffered his season-ending knee injury, and Yates finished the season with Miami while Doughty finished the season on the practice squad.

And in 2017 the Dolphins re-signed David Fales when Jay Cutler suffered his rib injury. The Dolphins did give Doughty a raise, but never promoted 53-man roster.

Tannehill, who missed all of 2017 because of a lingering knee injury, is expected to fully participate in Miami’s offseason training program, and the Dolphins signed Brock Osweiler, a six-year veteran, and resigned him to the Fales backups.

Miami’s decision makers have also expressed a desire to select a quarterback early in the 2018 draft, possibly using the No. 11 pick in the first round to achieve that goal.

Doughty, to serve as his North Broward Prep product who starred at Western Kentucky, is now subject to being claimed off waivers. If no team claims him he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The Dolphins also signed offensive tackle Roubbens Joseph in a corresponding move. Joseph spent the 2017 offseason and training camp with the Baltimore Ravens after he was signed as an undrafted college free agent.

Joseph started 15 of the 20 games he played at the University of Buffalo. He started 12 games at left tackle his senior season.

Joseph will likely compete with Sam Young, who was re-signed last month, Zach Sterup and Eric Smith to determine which players serve as Laremy Tunsil and Ja’Wuan James’ primarily backups at left and right tackle.
