For Broward Sheriff’s deputies to even think about, let alone vote on, “no confidence” in Sheriff Scott Israel would be seen as a political move to deflect attention away from the deputies who failed to follow protocol in the early stages of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. And for anyone to second guess these deputies is patently unfair.

This was a tragedy implemented by a very sick young man whose anti-social behavior was observed and dismissed summarily at all levels with no meaningful action taken. Just another one of society’s “throw-away kids.” A wide-angle lens was needed to capture all the politicians mugging the TV cameras with condolences for the dead and the injured and their families. Everyone who had something to say made a feeble attempt at explaining why this happened, and that answer, folks, is the elephant in the room. It has nothing to do with the manner in which Sheriff Israel handled the situation, but rather the actions of a pathetic boy who the system failed.

We need to stop trying to blame someone. Move-on, taking a lesson from the students at Stoneman Douglas and take action to make change that could lead to preventing such a tragedy ever again. SunSentinel.com/ opinion/letters

or fearful within the confines of my own automobile. Recently I observed a male panhandling at the intersection of Linton Boulevard and Military Trail. Later that afternoon, I saw this same able-bodied person hardily walking back to West Atlantic Avenue, placard under his arm.

However, on another occasion, I was never so outraged as I waited for the turn signal on Military Trail and West Atlantic Avenue. A team of young men and women were soliciting donations for a “cancer stricken” victim. They all had gallon plastic jugs filled to the brim with money. As one approached my car, I lowered my window slightly and told him to take a hike in not-so-nice terms. Two men in an adjacent car told me that the same group was soliciting in Lake Worth the previous day.

Why is this permitted? This is a blot and an eyesore on our city. Why is this practice completely outlawed in neighboring cities but not Delray? it starts. First, they come for the Mexicans, then the Hondurans, the Muslims, the Somalis, the blacks, and then they come for me, a Jew — but there is no one left to fight, to resist — all under the guise of nationalism, religion and patriotism.

We must be vigilant and keep our eyes wide open, and if we do not mind our history, we are doomed to repeat it. It is happening here and in Europe. It has begun. When will we ever learn?
