Landry wins at Texas Open for first PGA Tour title
AUTO RACING: Josef Newgarden will remain up front Monday for the completion of the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama in Birmingham. Drivers got in just over 44 minutes of a scheduled 2-hour or 90-lap race under heavy rain. The race was called before it was halfway through and thus official.
GOLF: Andrew Landry won the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio for his first PGA Tour victory. He parred the final seven holes for a 4-under 68 and a two-stroke victory over Trey Mullinax and Sean O’Hair. ... Moriya Jutanugarn won the HUGEL-JTBC LA Open by two shots for her first victory in six years on the LPGA Tour, joining sister Ariya as the second siblings to win on the tour. She won in her 156th start after three career runner-up finishes. Annika and Charlotta Sorenstam were the first sisters to win on the LPGA Tour . ... Kirk Triplett holed out from a bunker for birdie on the first playoff hole in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf in Ridgedale, Mo., to lift himself and partner Paul Broadhurst past Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman. The 56-year-old Triplett won his sixth PGA Tour Champions title.
HOCKEY: Canucks RW Brock Boeser, Islanders C Mathew Barzal and Coyotes C Clayton Keller are the finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy for the NHL’s rookie of the year. The winner will be announced June 20 at the NHL Awards show in Las Vegas.
RUNNING: The hottest-ever London Marathon featured a Kenyan double as Eliud Kipchoge swept to a third victory in front of Buckingham Palace to join Vivian Cheruiyot, who won the women’s race on Sunday. Kipchoge, 33, ran the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 27 seconds in temperatures that reached 73.8 degrees near the finish.
SOCCER: Arsene Wenger said he wasn’t tired of managing Arsenal after 22 years in charge but quit after finding fan protests calling for his departure “hurtful” and damaging to the club’s image. The 68-yearold Frenchman discussed his decision with the media for the first time since his shock announcement Friday. “Wenger Out” banners have been displayed by fans at games — and at events unconnected to football — as disillusionment grew at Arsenal’s failure to win the Premier League since 2004 . ... CONCACAF canceled the rest of its 2018 Women’s Under-17 Championship following violence in Managua, Nicaragua, where the tournament began Thursday.
TENNIS: Rafael Nadal won a record 31st Masters title after beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 in the Monte Carlo Masters final in Monaco. Nadal became the first man in the Open era to win the same title 11 times while moving one ahead of Novak Djokovic for career Masters titles. The victory also ensures the Spaniard keeps his No. 1 ranking ahead of Roger Federer. ... The defending champion United States will play in a second consecutive Fed Cup final after defeating host France 3-2 in Aix-enProvence. Madison Keys secured the decisive point for the visiting team by beating Pauline Parmentier 7-6 (4), 6-4. The Czech Republic will host the U.S. in the Nov. 10-11 final after defeating Germany 4-1 in Stuttgart.
SAN ANTONIO — Andrew Landry won the Valero Texas Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory, pulling away with early birdies and holding on with par saves.
The 30-year-old Texan, busy at home in Austin with the recent birth of the family's first child, parred the final seven holes for a 4-under 68 and a twostroke victory over Trey Mullinax and Sean O'Hair.
“It was obviously a tough week this week,” Landry said. “Going into the last few weeks with the childbirth and just really getting back out.”
Landry played at Arkansas after starring at Port Neches-Groves High School east of Houston. Many family members were at TPC San Antonio on Sunday.
“Everybody was out,” Landry said. “It was pretty special to be able to snag a victory with everybody being here to share it.”
Landry finished at 17-under 271. He earned $1,116,000 and a spot in the Masters next year.
“I didn't even really think about it, to be honest with you,” Landry said. “There's a lot of perks for a tour win and you've just got to continue to stay focused and not think about those kind of things.”
Landry took a two-stroke lead to the par-5 18th after Mullinax chunked a flop shot and bogeyed the short par-4 17th. Landry hit a 55-foot putt over a ridge to 3 feet for par on 17 and made an 8-footer on 18 after running a 50-foot birdie try past.
Mullinax closed with a 69 a day after breaking the AT&T Oaks Course record with a 62. downhill
