Driver ID’d in crash that killed 4
DELRAY BEACH – The driver of a pickup truck that smashed into a minivan Saturday night in Delray Beach, killing four people, was identified Sunday by police.
Paul Wilson Streater, 21, of Fort Lauderdale, was behind the wheel of the speeding gray Chevrolet Silverado, Delray Beach police said.
Streater was not hurt. He stayed on scene and hasn’t been charged, police spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.
“He is cooperating with investigators and was released from police custody pending the conclusion of the traffic homicide investigation,” the Delray Beach Police Depart-
ment said Sunday on its Twitter account.
Police said they would not release the names of the four who died until today.
The Silverado pickup was speeding south on Federal Highway just before 7:30 p.m. when it encountered traffic, i Moschella said. The truck tried to avoid the traffic by swerving into a turn lane.
A white minivan was stopped, waiting to turn left onto La-Mat Avenue, one of the entrances to the Tropic Isle community. The Silverado plowed into the van, crushing it.
Both vehicles were carried into the northbound lane, hitting a Buick Encore SUV. The vehicles ended up in front of Enterprise RentA-Car on the east side of Federal.
Fire rescue used a winch to pull apart the three entangled vehicles, and cut open the minivan using hydraulic tools to find four people dead inside.
“This was an extremely violent crash. It crushed that minivan upon impact,” Moschella said.
Two men in the Buick were uninjured.
Police will investigate whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the tragedy.
Streater, a native of Seebrook, Texas, was arrested on burglary charges by Fort Lauderdale police on Nov. 9. That case, a second-degree felony, is pending.
Police are asking anyone who has information about the crash to call traffic homicide investigator Henry Lugo at 561-243-7800.
