Dolphins pick up local talent

FAU running back Howell Jr. among signees

- By Chris Perkins Staff writer DOLPHINS, 3C

DAVIE — The Miami Dolphins acquired defensive tackle help and competition at kicker among their undrafted rookie freeagent signees. And a few of the signees, such as Florida Atlantic running back Gregory Howell Jr., are local products getting their shot at playing with their hometown team.

At defensive tackle Anthony Moten, a University of Miami and St. Thomas product, and Central Florida defensive tackle Jamiyus Pittman could both get a long look because the Dolphins didn’t draft a defensive tackle and it remains and area of concern.

Among Miami’s other undrafted rookie signees are offensive tackle David Steinmetz (Purdue), guard Connor Hilland (William & Mary), kicker Greg Joseph (FAU), defensive ends Quincy Redmon (Fairmont State) and Claudy Mathieu (Notre Dame College), linebacker Mike McCray (Michigan), and long snapper Lucas Gravelle (TCU).

The Dolphins haven’t signed a quarterback.

The defensive tackle situation could get more crowded if the Dolphins decide to sign a veteran free agent or two. But Moten and Pittman should be in the mix early, at the very least.

The Dolphins return starting defensive tackle Jordan Phillips along with reserves Davon Godchaux, Vincent Taylor and Gabe Wright. All but Phillips are young and unproven.

McCray, an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection, could get an extended look as
