Uphold White House dinner tradition

-

Please excuse me for disagreeing with your May 1 editorial, “End the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.” Yes, perhaps comedienne Michelle Wolf may well be the female version of the late Lenny Bruce. Perhaps one might say her jokes were not in the best of taste. However, before we nail her to the cross of self-righteous indignation, there are things to consider here.

First of all, we have a so-called president who has sullied the dignity of the office by regularly trashing the press, lying constantly, using vulgar and crude innuendos to make a point, and destroying the lives of those who have the misfortune to cross his path. Many members of his staff, such as Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne Conway, debase themselves everyday by re-enforcing Trump’s lies in order to keep their jobs. They appear to have no ability to laugh at themselves (same as their boss), completely lacking any sense of humor.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been a tradition for many years and has served to further the careers of aspiring journalists. To give the likes of a man like Donald Trump (regardless of his title) the satisfaction of ending this time-honored tradition — simply because a performer may have been a bit edgy and managed to hurt some feelings with blunt honesty — would be a sad day for free speech in our country.

After all, Donald Trump offends our sensibilities every day. Perhaps what truly needs to be ended is this farce we call his presidency. Linda Ribner, Lauderhill
