Hollywood police to pay tribute to fallen heroes

- By Susannah Bryan Staff writer

Seven fallen heroes have died in the line of duty while working for the Hollywood Police Department, dating all the way back to 1926.

Those seven — six officers and a K-9 named Kimbo — will be honored during a Tuesday ceremony, an annual tradition that began more than 25 years ago.

“This is a ceremony for anyone who wants to come out and support our officers and honor our fallen heroes,” said police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. in front of police headquarters at 3250 Hollywood Blvd., where a permanent memorial has stood since 2014.

The names of all those lost will be read aloud: Alex Del Rio, who died in a car crash on Nov. 22, 2008; Frankie Shivers, who was gunned down while trying to rescue a mentally ill woman from a burning car on Sept. 6, 1982; Phillip Yourman and Byron Riley, who were killed when their patrol car hit a tree while they pursued a suspect on Aug. 30, 1973; Henry Minard, who was gunned down when he responded to a store’s silent alarm on Nov. 18, 1972; and Owen Coleman, who was killed while trying to break up a fight on Jan. 25, 1926. Kimbo the K-9 was killed by gunfire in 1997.

“The fire department will set up their trucks along Hollywood Boulevard to show their support,” Grossman said. “We usually have more than 100 people attend. That includes surviving family members, friends and retired officers who remember them.”
