A Coral Springs police officer who responded to the Parkland school shooting says he was told the gunman appeared to be inside the school.

Officer Richard Best said a Broward Sheriff ’s Office deputy told him he had heard gunshots and believed a shooter was on the second or third floor of the 1200 building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, according to a report released by Coral Springs on Friday.

Best said he shared the information with another Coral Springs officer and he and others went into the building searching for the shooter.

The deputy, standing outside an adjacent building, outside.

The deputy is not identified in the report, and it’s unclear the exact time when the interaction took place.

Gunman Nikolas Cruz, who killed 17 people in the school, may have already fled.

Best did not say in his report that he himself heard gunshots.

Scot Peterson, the school’s resource officer, has been ridiculed for waiting outside the building without going to confront the gunman.

He later said he was unsure of where the gunshots were coming from and resigned from the agency.

Sheriff Scott Israel said Peterson should have gone into the building to kill the shooter.
