School district clears teacher
The Broward County school district has cleared a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High teacher who had been accused of calling a conservative student “the next Hitler.”
The allegations were made against Greg Pittman, a history teacher at the school that was the site of the Feb. 14 massacre.
“School leadership investigated the complaint/allegation and were unable to corroborate the allegations from the complaint,” district spokeswoman Tracy Clark said in a statement to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
The allegations surfaced late last month after Pittman, a supporter of stricter gun laws, got into a lengthy Twitter debate with junior Kyle Kashuv. a staunch supporter of gun rights. Pittman had criticized Kashuv for tweeting a photo with a semi-automatic rifle on April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine massacre.
The photo was taken after Kashuv had visited a shooting range with his father. It prompted a brief investigation that concluded there was no threat to school safety.
Kashuv, who doesn’t have Pittman as a teacher, said three students told him that Pittman compared him to Hitler.
“I only know what I was told, but it’s quite baffling why three students I don’t know well would lie,” Kashuv said Wednesday. “This leads me to question the investigation's outcome."
Pittman couldn’t be reached, despite attempts by phone and text.
