Want to be mayor? Boca qualifying period starts

- By Marci Shatzman Staff writer

Candidates who want to run for two seats in Boca Raton city government can make it official, now that a qualifying period has begun.

The mayor’s seat is up for grabs as well as the Boca City Council’s Seat A, left vacant when Deputy Mayor Scott Singer was sworn in as mayor earlier this month.

Singer is filling in after the prior mayor, Susan Haynie, was suspended from facing public charges.

The qualifying period for mayor will be part of the Aug. 28 special election that began Monday and will last through 5 p.m. May 30.

The special election will piggyback on the primary election for governor, Senate, Congress, judges and other seats. Boca will have the only City Council seats on the ballot, said Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher. office while corruption

Singer is one of several candidates running for the rest of Haynie’s term through March 2020.

Al Zucaro, who ran against Haynie for mayor in last year’s municipal election, said in a statement Monday he intends to run for mayor and will file his paperwork this week.
