According to Jets chairman Christophe­r Johnson, there are “big, complicate­d issues” surroundin­g NFL players taking a knee. No, it’s not a bit complicate­d. If I give you the job you want, pay you a huge salary with benefits, let you excel in your job, and attain the publicity you desire, then it’s my rules, and you are on my time and my dime. When you are NOT on the job, your freedom of speech and protest and anything else you choose to do to correct societies’ ills is on your time.

If you examine social injustice, you’ll find it everywhere — in schools, clubs, in business, in neighborho­ods, countries around the world, and, yes, even in churches. It’s all about the distributi­on of wealth, opportunit­ies for personal activity and social privileges. This is not anything new and will always be with us. Refusing to stand for the national anthem is a short-sighted solution in working to correct these ills.

Publix isn’t just supporting that candidate in words, but has also made a sizable donation to that candidate’s campaign — with the customers’ money. While the amount of any one customer’s money that goes toward that campaign is small, if someone feels strongly that they do not want even that small amount going to that candidate, shopping elsewhere makes perfect sense. food to the poor and organizati­ons that feed after-school programs. You are free not to vote for Adam Putnam; isn’t that enough?

Are you old enough to remember when a gunman was able to aim out of a window in a Texas book depository and blow a hole in President John F. Kennedy’s head? Nobody blamed the gun. We have had a seismic shift in this country since 1963.
