A likely decision Tuesday

-

What’s needed Tuesday is not a big debate about how to divide $15.6 billion between the cities and county, but whether this is the right vision for moving people north and south, east and west, and down the street around the corner.

We encourage the commission to call a time out and better think this through. True, some answers will only reveal themselves with time. But now’s the time to dig into the details. It’s hard to trust a plan with so many unanswered questions.

Furr holds the mayor’s gavel this year and is helping drive the agenda. He wants the tax question on the November ballot, where it will face the greatest voter turnout. We certainly respect his point of view and would generally agree with him.

There’s a political calculation there, too. More Democrats are expected to turn out for the mid-term election and it’s believed that turnout could push the tax over the top.

But also consider that November’s ballot will be chock full of races for U.S. senator, governor, the Florida Cabinet, the Legislature, the county commission, the school board, city councils and judgeships, plus state constitutional amendments and charter review questions.

Voters are likely to face ballot fatigue, which means a good number won’t reach the tax question. And they’ll be hearing many loud calls to vote “No!” on other ballot questions. The sales tax could get caught in the chorus. Do we really want a transportation tax to face a third strike?

The tax question may deserve a special election. It also makes sense to await the regional plan Stuart’s group is building.

We believe Broward needs more money to address transportation challenges, but we also believe that if taxpayers will be asked to pony up for 30 years, we deserve a bolder 30-year vision and greater accountability.

Absent that, a 10-year tax may not be perfect, but it sounds legitimate.
