A look back at the Marlins’ memorable moments

- By Craig Davis Staff writer

With the Marlins celebrating their 25th anniversary during this weekend’s three-game series against the Padres, here are the most memorable moments and developments, for better or worse, in the up-and-down history of the franchise. In chronological order:

Hough was 45 and beginning his 24th season in the major leagues when he held the Los Angeles Dodgers to three runs and six hits in six innings to lead the Marlins to a 6-3 win on April 5, 1993, in front of 42,334 at Joe Robbie Stadium. Jeff Conine, who would become known as Mr. Marlin, went 4 for 4 and rookie Scott Pose made a spectacular catch in center field.

In their first major trade less than three months into their first season, the Marlins acquired reigning National League batting champion Gary Sheffield in a five-player trade with San Diego that included Trevor Hoffman, who would become a Hall of Fame closer for the Padres. Sheffield became the first player on a first-year expansion team voted into the starting lineup of the All-Star Game and hit a home run in the Marlins’ first All-Star at-bat at Baltimore. Conine played a key role in both Marlins World Series titles, but he got only one All-Star at-bat in his 17-year career. It came as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning at the Ballpark at Arlington, Texas, in 1995. He made the most of it, hitting the second pitch he saw from Oakland A’s reliever Steve Ontiveros 410 feet into the left-field seats for the decisive run in a 3-2 National League victory. That secured the game MVP trophy for Conine, who became the 10th player to hit a home run in his first All-Star at-bat.
