Who was rapper XXXTentacion?
XXXTentacion, is a rapper from Lauderhill, Florida, who was shot to death on June 18, 2018, while shopping for a motorcycle in Deerfield Beach.
Known for melding hiphop with elements of punk, emo, indie, and other genres, XXXTentacion, given name Jahseh Onfroy, began recording music with friends in his bedroom and releasing it online.
Age 20 at the time of his death, XXXTentacion was one of a growing number of rappers from Broward County to gain widespread popularity with fans.
His breakout track, “Look at Me!” has over 115 million plays on Soundcloud, an online music streaming service, since it was released in December 2015.
XXXTentacion had been accused of viciously assaulting his pregnant ex-girlfriend, among other charges. He was slated to go on trial in Miami.
The music-streaming service Spotify announced in May it was removing XXXTentacion’s music from its curated and algorithmically generated playlists. The move drew backlash, and Spotify later reversed its decision.
XXXTentacion, who was known simply as “X” to his fans, was shopping for a motorcycle when a gunman ran up to his vehicle and shot him, according to TMZ.
The fatal shooting happened just before 4 p.m. at 3671 N. Dixie Highway in Deerfield Beach, the site of Riva Motorsports. The motive appears to be a robbery, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.
He was taken to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach and the Broward County Sheriff confirmed he had died.
