Deadly ambush of XXXTentacion detailed in new court papers

- By Linda Trischitta Staff writer

South Florida rapper XXXTentacion was leaving a motorcycle dealership when an SUV blocked his sports car, two masked gunmen jumped out and fired multiple times, killing him, according to court documents released Friday.

Dedrick Devonshay Williams, 22, who allegedly was driving the SUV, was taken into custody Wednesday while driving outside his Pompano Beach home.

Though detectives don’t believe Williams shot at XXXTentacion, his active role during the homicide led to his arrest on a premeditated murder charge, an arrest warrant said.

There are multiple suspects in the case and they were at large Friday

night, a law enforcement source said.

Surveillance video from outside RIVA Motorsports as well as from inside the business, 3671 N. Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach, recorded how two men entered the dealership as XXXTentacion shopped. It also recorded when he was ambushed while leaving the parking lot.

XXXTentacion had brought a friend along to browse at the store, where he was a regular customer. What happened to his passenger, and why the rapper was targeted, were not described in the documents.

David Bogenschutz, the attorney for the performer and songwriter, previously told the South Florida Sun Sentinel that detectives were initially investigating the killing that began as a random robbery. He said it was believed that his client had gone to a bank before traveling to RIVA Motorsports.

It was about 3:30 p.m. Monday when XXXTentacion, 20, whose given name is Jahseh Onfroy, drove his BMW to the motorcycle dealer. Two minutes later, a dark-colored SUV arrived and parked in the dealer’s lot.

Two men got out of the SUV — one wearing a white tank top and bright orange sandals, another wearing a dark T-shirt — and entered the store. The man in the white tank, later identified as Williams, paid cash for a black neoprene mask, and the men left the store, an arrest warrant said.

They returned to the SUV, and backed the vehicle into a homeowner’s driveway opposite the dealership’s north gate.

At 3:55 p.m., XXXTentacion’s BMW left through the north gate, the SUV pulled in front of it and two armed men dressed in dark clothing and gloves — one wearing a red mask, the other in a black mask — approached the rapper while he was in the driver’s seat.

There was a brief struggle, the masked men reached inside the BMW, took a small bag and XXXTentacion was shot multiple times.

Broward Sheriff’s deputies identified Williams, who had posed in photographs on Facebook and Instagram while wearing the same bright orange sandals, or footwear that was similar, the arrest warrant said. Witnesses also identified him.

Williams is in the main Broward County jail in Fort Lauderdale, being held without bond. Paramedics took XXXTentacion to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, where he died shortly after having been shot.
