Answering the jacket

-

The first lady’s now infamous jacket should become standard issue for anyone representing the Trump administration.

While traveling to and from a visit with migrant children in Texas, Melania Trump wore a jacket that on the back had a graffiti-style message reading: “I really don’t care, do u?”

It was as if she was trolling her own effort to bring a little compassion to the border mess her husband made – with his ill-fated policy to separate children from families in immigration disputes.

The first lady’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham insisted that, “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message.”

But intentional or not, Melania Trump’s fashion statement on Thursday represented the lack of empathy that is becoming her husband’s presidential legacy.

It’s easy to imagine the president thinking “I really don’t care” when he allows an immigration policy that traumatizes children.

And “I really don’t care” is probably the same presidential thought bubble that occurs as he signs measures rolling back health care, environmental protections and Wall Street regulations.

Trump’s actions keep showing he just doesn’t care about those who will suffer from them. The lingering question left from his wife’s jacket is, “do u?”
