Principal may get school district security post
FORT LAUDERDALE —The mother of one of the students slain at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High will be named to a newly created leadership role in the Broward school district, overseeing improved security measures.
April Schentrup will be reassigned from principal of Pemtroubled broke Pines Elementary to director of school safety and security, upon approval by the School Board next week, according to the board’s agenda. The appointment
would
be effective June 27 and last for six months to one year.
The School Board on Tuesday also will be asked to vote to retain two campus monitors — Andrew Medina and David Thomas — both barred from the Parkland school and reassigned to security jobs at an undisclosed location.
Medina told investigators he saw killer Nicolas Cruz arrive and recognized him as a former student but did not confront him or call for a lockdown of the school. He alerted Thomas, who told investigators he saw Cruz enter a stairwell carrying a “3-foot-long duffel bag.”
Thomas said he raced up the nearest steps on the opposite side of the building to “try to hit him off,” when he heard gunfire.
