MIAMI — Jose Urena’s protracted struggle in the sixth inning Wednesdsay at San Francisco not only led to a loss. It landed the Marlins’ right-hander on the disabled list.

The Marlins made the move Friday, placing Urena on the 10-day DL with a shoulder impingement and reinstating reliever Nick Wittgren, who had been sidelined since June 2 with a bruised finger.

Urena’s best stretch of the season unraveled quickly when he gave up five runs in the sixth against the Giants. He revealed after the game that he felt some discomfort in his arm during the inning.

He had cruised through the first five innings without allowing a run while throwing just 60 pitches. He would labor through 39 pitches in the sixth before

departing with two outs after a 14-pitch battle with Gorkys Hernandez, who ended up hitting a two-run single.

Urena was coming off his best outing of the season when he shut out the Orioles for eight innings on three hits in Baltimore on June 15.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly told reporters after the game that there was no indication Urena was having any physical difficulty in the inning. He fastball velocity remained strong at 97 mph.

“You’re feeling like he’s left his pitch count in a good place,” Mattingly said.
