Marlins LHP Caleb Smith (5-6, 4.03 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) vs. Rockies RHP German Marquez (5-7, 5.20, 1.47): Smith is coming off a rocky start in San Francisco, in which he gave up four earned runs in four innings. It was somewhat of a blip in an otherwise strong season. Smith leads all Marlins starters in ERA and strikeout rate. Smith’s ERA has been worse on the road (4.89 vs. 3.13) than at home but his WHIP is about the same, and he has given up fewer hits in one more inning of work away from Marlins Park. … Marquez’s ERA is the seventh-highest in the majors among qualified starters, but it’s just the third-lowest ERA on the Rockies. Like many of the other pitchers in Colorado, Marquez has struggled at Coors Field. In his home ballpark, Marquez has a 7.45 ERA, and his opponents are hitting .331 against him. Marquez has accumulated some solid strikeout numbers, as his 8.81 strikeouts per nine innings places him 33rd among all qualified starters.
