Critically injured Husky-mix saved at last minute
She was mere minutes from death — but thanks to a group of strangers a critically injured, 3-year-old Husky-mix is now on the mend at the Jupiter Pet Emergency and Specialist Center.
Alma was just about to be euthanized Sunday at a shelter in Greenville, South Carolina, after being found last week with a broken pelvis and a broken left front leg.
But then, the call came in to GTS Husky Rescue of Jupiter, with information about the dog’s plight, and Kaylin Ricciadi sprang into action.
Within 24 hours, Ricciadi had a sympathetic shelter employee take Alma to the airport in Greenville where two volunteer pilots from Pilots N Paws Pet Rescue Services flew her to Florida, and another volunteer drove Alma to the emergency center in Jupiter.
“It was a miracle that they found her when she did because she was in critical condition,” Dr. Sarah Evans said.
“Her life would have been such a waste if she was euthanized at this age,” said Ricciadi, who has spent the last several years working in the GTS Husky Rescue program.
Sunday should have been Alma’s turn.
“She only was minutes away, minutes before she was going to be euthanized,” Ricciadi said through tears.
Had it not been for all those volunteers who came together at the last minute, she says, Alma wouldn’t be here. “It takes a lot of coordinating,” Ricciadi said. “It takes a lot of good people with a lot of heart to do this.”
On Monday, Alma underwent surgery that lasted about an hour.
“It was a challenging surgery, but it was definitely doable,” Evans said. “We got the pieces back together and the x-rays looked beautiful.”
“It wasn’t her time,” said.
Evans predicts Alma make a full recovery. Ricciadi will
