Acts highlight Caribbean comedy
Caribbean-flavored humor will be center stage tonight at Miramar Cultural Center.
The slate of standup acts at the inaugural Caribbean Comedy Night includes Rohan Gunter and Chris “Johnny” Daley of Jamaica and Nikki Crosby of Trinidad and Tobago. The evening will be hosted by New York-based internet star Majah Hype, who prefers to say he is originally from the West Indies rather than specify which island nation.
“Every time I do a show in South Florida … it’s always events that are built around the community and culture,” Hype says in an email interview. In the seven years since he began his comedy career performing skits on YouTube, Hype (whose real name is Collin Nigel McPherson) has appeared on “The Wendy Williams Show” and BET as well as onstage with Cedric the Entertainer and Marlon Wayans.
How did you comedy?
I originally started via social media, doing the videos and stuff like that. People asked if I do standup comedy. It was an opportunity that I wanted because it would be an opportunity for me to take advantage of the stage. start doing
Why did you want to do this showcase of Caribbean comedians?
I’m always for helping the community and the Caribbean community. I try to be a part of enlightening the community and bettering our culture.
What’s it like working in a group show, and have you previously worked with any of the acts on the bill?
I’m always working with different people; people I’m familiar with and people I’m not. I’m the host of the night … I’m helping everybody get through their sets and make sure the crowd has a good night. For the most part, Nikki Crosby is someone I’ve worked with in Trinidad. Christopher Daley, I worked with about one month ago in Barbados.
Do you think it will be competitive between the artists?
I wouldn’t think so, because everybody comes from a different culture. Everybody is going to have their own feel and, of course, I’m there to fill the voids of every culture: Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti. I’m familiar with all those cultures.
