Astros: All-Star SS Carlos Correa is heading to the DL because of a stiff back. “We just need to get him completely symptomfree and not sore,” manager A.J. Hinch said. Correa is hitting .268 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs in 73 games and recently had a streak of 70 errorless games.
Angels: Shohei Ohtani’s elbow injury has healed enough that the two-way star can begin a hitting program. GM Billy Eppler said an MRI showed improvement in Ohtani’s ligament. Though Ohtani hasn’t been cleared to pitch, Eppler said Tommy John surgery isn’t forecast. ... RHP Jake Jewell broke his right fibula in Wednesday night’s game and will need season-ending surgery.
Athletics: Sean Manaea won his third straight start in a 4-2 victory over the Tigers that gave the A’s a four-game sweep. Jed Lowrie had two hits and went 9-for-17 with two home runs and three doubles in the series. The A’s went 8-2 on a three-city trip. The Tigers’ skid reached nine.
Diamondbacks: Zack Greinke allowed seven singles and no walks in seven innings and was an offensive force in a 4-0 shutout of the Marlins. Greinke singled twice, drove in a run, stole a base and scored. Paul Goldschmidt had three hits for the D’backs, who matched their season high by climbing 13 games above .500. Marlins backup C Brian Holaday had thrown out a team-record nine consecutive runners trying to steal before Greinke ended the streak.
Mariners: Nelson Cruz homered and drove in three runs and the Mariners utilized two errors in the 10th to beat the Orioles 4-2 and complete their first fourgame sweep at Baltimore in franchise history. The Mariners improved to 8-0 in extra innings.
Cubs: Anthony Rizzo’s threerun double and Addison Russell’s two-run homer keyed a sevenrun seventh in an 11-5 win over the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw threw five innings of one-run ball in his second start since coming off the DL. He allowed four hits, struck out six and walked none while throwing 68 pitches.
