Shameful attitude by Sunrise manager

Who does Sunrise City Manager Richard Salamon think he is? If a coupon is expired and the store employee refuses to take it, so be it. Do you think you can stamp your feet and demand a free item? What are you teaching our youth? You should not be managing the City of Sunrise with this kind of entitled attitude. Gale Gormly, Pembroke Pines

Outrageous salary for city manager

I just read how a Sunrise city manager making $204,000 a year started an argument over an expired coupon for a $3.99 bundt cake. Why are these city officials making these outrageous salaries? With the low cost of living in Florida, no civil service job should pay more than $100,000. This is why cities and counties are trying to tax us more every year. If the public could see what these officials earn in these agencies, they would not be voting for additional property and sales tax increases. Eric Golub, Boynton Beach

Inhumane to suggest killing iguanas

The front-page article headlined “Chicken of the Trees,” about eating South Florida's iguanas, is disturbing by its lack of balance and concern for the animal. Suggesting that homeowners catch (how, humanely, is never addressed;) kill (how, humanely, is never addressed;) cut off their heads (alive or dead is never addressed) and then roast and eat them is inhumane.

Yes, we have an iguana problem. Trust me, I know. A 4-foot and 3-foot iguana come daily into my backyard. But it’s irresponsible to supply recipes and glibly suggest that anyone go out and kill and eat them. What's next? Feral cat pie?? Muscovy duck stew? Think before you write. Rosalind Farrell, Sunrise

I got sick reading about the old man from Trinidad who eats iguanas, lion steak and raccoons. Why are you celebrating this trend when millions of people are trying save animals, such as lions? This is a civilized country, with many people trying to go vegan. Rosemary Homeister, Miramar

Men, take charge of your health

In an age of contradiction where a man’s sexual prowess is both praised and shunned, the incentive to engage in meaningful conversations about sexual behavior and health is limited. Seeking professional help regarding testing and questions on sex is normally associated with women, but men have just as much to lose when it comes to STDs. The unfortunate reality is that HIV/AIDS continues to run rampant in South Florida, moreso than any other area in the nation. More unfortunate is that this epidemic could be severely countered if the culture became more open about men’s sexual health.

So I urge my fellow men to take advantage of nearby resources and to never fear your own body. When local Planned Parenthood centers offer affordable options for your health care, do the right thing for yourself and your loved ones and access these easily available resources. Whether it’s completely private STD testing, contraceptives or professional counseling, there are options and no room for excuses. As Men’s Health Month comes to an end, make a promise to yourself: take responsibility for your health. It’s the manliest thing you can do. Diego Torres, Miami

What Republicans offer in election

The 2018 midterm elections will determine the future of America. By their silence and acquiescence to President Trump, the Congressional Republicans offer the following future:

An America where truth doesn’t matter

An America where racism is acceptable (Charlottesville and much more)

An America where the wealthy get much wealthier (The new tax plan )

An America that turns its back on its most vulnerable, leaving millions without health care and soaring premiums for others.

An America where the rule of law is for those in power, decimating our world class institutions.

An America without a free press (fake news)

An America with a Supreme Court that sustains all of the above.

If that’s the America you choose, then vote Republican. If that America repulses you, then vote against every Republican and restore reason, compassion and civility to the America we love. Mark Lippman, Boca Raton
