Sunrise-based Federated National Insurance Co. has changed its name.

One of just five publicly traded property and casualty insurers based in Florida, it now calls itself FedNat Insurance Co., the company said in a June 29 news release.

Michael H. Braun, CEO and president, said the name change “will match our branding initiative, which includes aligning our holding company, largest insurance company and our managing general agency with the same FedNat name that our partner agents have known us by for a long time.”

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation approved the company’s name

change request on May 29, and the company’s shareholders voted on May 31 to change its parent company’s name to FedNat Holding Co.

The company told state insurance regulators that it would notify its customers by mail of the name change. As of March 31, the company had 256,075 property and casualty policies statewide — fifth-most behind Universal Property & Casualty, state-owned Citizens Property & Casualty, Security First, and American Integrity.

In the tricounty region, the company has 63,384 policies, also fifth-most behind Universal Property & Casualty, Citizens, American Bankers, and Heritage.

Founded in 1992, FedNat Holding Co. also sells national flood insurance in Florida, and homeowner insurance in Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina and Texas.
