- By Michael Mayo Dining critic

Welcome to the latest edition of Hot Plates, your weekly guide to food events and dining promotions around South Florida. Independence Day, better known as the Fourth of July, comes on a Wednesday this year, which means the hump can fall either way on which side of the week to slack off and take off. Many restaurants, particularly those near the beach and fireworks displays, will mark the occasion with food and drink specials. Happy 242nd, America!

a cool (and hot) spot in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood that chef-restaurateur Michael Schwartz opened earlier this year, will celebrate its first July Fourth with stunning views of Biscayne Bay and fireworks shows from its dining terrace. The upscale, Latin-inspired restaurant will feature special items from its wood-fired grill, including whole roasted pig and creative spins on burgers (made from chorizo) and hot dogs (made from butifarra), along with grilled oysters, roasted corn, watermelon salad and drink specials, including $5 beers and $15 glasses of Veuve Clicquot Champagne. 3101 NE Seventh Ave., Miami, 305-702-5528.

one of the best restaurants to open in Broward this year, will offer oceanfront views of fireworks displays from its rooftop terrace. Tickets will be sold at the door ($125 for adults, $75 for children) and include a buffet station. There will be a $1,000 minimum (paid in advance) for groups wishing to reserve a terrace booth, which includes a bottle of Moet. 270 N. Pompano Beach Blvd., Pompano Beach, 954-607-6530.

a beachfront Asian restaurant tucked behind the Hyde Resort and Residences, will host a July Fourth cookout on its second-floor terrace from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. The cookout will feature an outdoor robata grill and DJ Nuny Love. Dinner will feature regular menu items and views of nighttime fireworks displays along the coast. 111 S. Surf Road, Hallandale Beach, 954-271-3222.

at Beach Place in Fort Lauderdale will offer good views of the city’s fireworks show, live music from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m., its regular menu of Cajun and comfort cuisine and multiple drink specials, including buckets of Bud Light Orange and Bud Light Lime (5 for $19) all day, and $3 margaritas and wine during happy hour (4-7 p.m.). 17 S. Atlantic Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, 954-463-7425.

will hold a July Fourth party with food, drink and music. The BBQ, Bourbon and Beer fest (noon-8 p.m.) will feature complimentary beer samplings (21 and over with RSVP) from local breweries Veza Sur, Biscayne Brewing Company, Wynwood Brewing, Concrete Beach, Stone Brewing, MIA Brewing and Estrella Damm. 56 NW 29th St., Miami, 305-351-0366.

with National Fried Chicken Day on Friday, and chef Lindsay Autry will celebrate at her Regional Kitchen and Public House in West Palm Beach with all-you-can-eat fried chicken lunch ($14 dark meat, $16 white meat) and dinner ($24), including three sides. Autry, a former “Top Chef ” competitor and Michelle Bernstein disciple who specializes in Southern cuisine, brines her chicken in sweet tea. 651 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach, 561-557-6460.
