Skilled laborers
A construction job fair is scheduled for Wednesday at the Lauderdale Lakes Branch Library.
Calling all skilled laborers: A construction job fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11 at the Lauderdale Lakes Branch Library, 3580 W. Oakland Park Blvd.
The hiring event, sponsored by county employment agency CareerSource Broward, is designed to help place local job seekers, dislocated workers and evacuees from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with employment opportunities throughout South Florida.
Employers scheduled to participate include Broward County government, Advanced Roofing Inc., Florida Power & Light Co., Allegiance Crane & Equipment, CJM Construction, and Milspec Industries.
Available positions include mechanic, crane operator, administrative assistant, warehouse associate, electrician, roofing specialist and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) technician, according to CareerSource Broward.
Mason Jackson, president and CEO of CareerSource Broward, said Florida’s construction industry continues to grow, which is resulting in labor shortages.
“South Florida’s economy is doing extremely well, but we recognize that there are still some employers in certain industries that are having a difficult time recruiting, training and keeping skilled workers,” Jackson said.
Broward County added 4,300 construction jobs over the year, with an average annual wage of nearly $50,000, according to data from Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity. There are more than 51,000 people employed in the state’s construction industry — a 9.2 percent increase over a year ago.
There is no cost to attend the job fair, but online registration is encouraged. Go to careersourcebroward.com and click on “2018 Construction Industry Job Fair.”
Car-ride service Uber is offering job seekers 20 percent off a ride to the job fair by using the code CAREERSOURCEFL.
