Las Olas work will clog traffic into October

A two-block stretch of Las Olas Boulevard between Seabreeze Avenue and State Road A1A on the barrier island will closeMonda­y and isn’t expected to reopen until Oct. 28, Fort Lauderdale city officials said. The closure at the eastern base of the Las Olas Bridge will run fromthe Quarterdec­k to the Elbo Room.

Beach traffic on Las Olas Boulevard is going to be a congested nightmare of detours for the next three months.

A two-block stretch of the boulevard between Seabreeze Avenue and A1A on the barrier island will close Monday and isn’t expected to reopen until Oct. 28, Fort Lauderdale city officials said.

Theclosure at the eastern base of the Las Olas Bridge will stretch from the Quarterdec­k restaurant to the ElboRoom.

Constructi­on for the city’s $49 million Las Olas Beach Park project is the reason for the closure. The initiative includes a promenade, two newwaterfr­ont parks and a five-level parking garage. The goal is to create a signature entrancewa­y to the beach and spur upscale redevelopm­ent.

Constructi­on of the garage on the north side of the bridgebega­nin the spring of2017 and is ready for a facade installati­on. Completion is scheduled for next summer.

A series of detours has been designed to keep beach trafficmov­ing.

Eastbound traffic on Las Olas Boulevard will be detoured south on Seabreeze Boulevard then east on Southeast Fifth Street. One-way Fifth Street will allow two-way traffic during the closure.
