A two-block stretch of the boulevard between Seabreeze Avenue and A1A on the barrier island will close Monday and isn’t expected to reopen until Oct. 28, Fort Lauderdale city officials said.
Theclosure at the eastern base of the Las Olas Bridge will stretch from the Quarterdeck restaurant to the ElboRoom.
Construction for the city’s $49 million Las Olas Beach Park project is the reason for the closure. The initiative includes a promenade, two newwaterfront parks and a five-level parking garage. The goal is to create a signature entranceway to the beach and spur upscale redevelopment.
Construction of the garage on the north side of the bridgebeganin the spring of2017 and is ready for a facade installation. Completion is scheduled for next summer.
A series of detours has been designed to keep beach trafficmoving.
Eastbound traffic on Las Olas Boulevard will be detoured south on Seabreeze Boulevard then east on Southeast Fifth Street. One-way Fifth Street will allow two-way traffic during the closure.
