Ex-Dolphin Francis says TSA spilled his mother’s ashes

- By Steve Svekis Staff writer

Former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle A.J. Francis angrily took to Twitter after he said the Transportation Security Administration opened a container holding his recently deceased mother’s ashes and did not competently reseal it, causing some of her ashes to spill out.

The New York Giants defensive tackle said he opened his suitcase, and found the cremains spilled onto his clothing — and a notice of inspection from the agency.

Francis then posted on Twitter to rip the government airline-security agency, and — as could be expected — he was infuriated.

“Hey you pieces of s--- at @TSA next time you a------- feel the need to go thru my mother’s ashes for no reason, make sure you close it back so her remains aren’t spilled on all my clothes ... the least you pieces of garbage can do is your f---ing job,” Francis wrote on Twitter (@ajfrancis410).

The TSA.gov site states: “If carrying on the crematory remains, they are subject to screening and must pass through the X-ray machine. If the X-ray Operator cannot clear the remains, TSA may apply other, non-intrusive means of resolving the alarm. Under no circumstances will an officer open the container, even if the passenger requests this be done.”

A TSA response to Francis’ initial tweet contained some of the policy language and was responded to with another expletive from the grieving son, who tweeted back, “Under all circumstances […] yourself.”

TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein told the Washington Post on Tuesday that video footage of the inspection shows that TSA agents were not aware the container inside Francis’s bag contained cremains. The agents weren’t responsible for the spill, she said.

“Video review of the screening of Mr. Francis’ checked bag at Los Angeles International Airport shows that it alarmed for an unidentified object,” Farbstein told the Post. “A TSA officer discovered the unidentified object was an opened, unmarked ceramic container, wrapped in tin foil inside a small bag. Upon further inspection of the checked bag, the container was loosely packaged, unmarked and the contents unknown to the TSA officer.”

“The TSA officer completed screening of the checked bag, clearing it to continue to its destination,” Farbstein continued. “The container was carefully repacked and placed in the bag.”

According to Francis’ Instagram account, his mother, Carrie Leanne Francis, died June 26 at age 46.

Francis, now with his sixth NFL team, played for the Dolphins from 2013-15 after going undrafted in 2013.

Near the end of his Miami tenure, Francis made news when it came out that he was an Uber driver in his free time.
