MIAMI — Marlins center fielder Lewis Brinson will be sidelined longer than previously anticipated.

Brinson was diagnosed with a right hip bone bruise on Friday afternoon, after the team initially called his ailment right hip inflammation. Brinson will rest until he no longer has any symptoms.

“It’s just one of those things that’s going to take a little bit of time,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “They’ll have to be careful with how they bring him back. It’s nothing that’s going to be long-term as long as we take care of it properly and give it time to heal and things like that.”

Brinson last played July 3 against Tampa Bay, a 16-inning affair that re-aggravated an injury the 24-year-old felt days prior. On the year, Brinson — acquired from Milwaukee in the Christian Yelich deal — is slashing .186/.232/.338 with nearly twice as many strikeouts (94) as hits (54).

Initially, Brinson hoped to return before next week’s All-Star break. That won’t be the case.

Instead, the Marlins will employ a center field rotation with Cameron Maybin starting most of the games, and utility player Yadiel Rivera filling in at times. Maybin, 31, is a 12-year veteran, but Rivera is a novice to center field.

Rivera made his first career start in center field last week in Washington, and the position became the seventh different one he’s played this season. He has played all four infield spots and all three outfield positions. Rivera is also Miami’s emergency catcher.

Mattingly said Rivera’s tools should translate to center field.

“He has all the attributes of being able to play center,” Mattingly said. “He runs well. He’s in that top tier of runners in the game. He throws well. He’s got good instincts out there. He’s got good instincts everywhere on the field, from a baseball standpoint. Everything leads to him being able to do that.”

Guerrero (left lumbar strain) each long-tossed on Friday afternoon. Both pitchers, plus right-hander Drew Rucinski (right groin strain), will continue recovery over the All-Star break in Jupiter.

Mattingly said Alcantara would likely have to make a rehab start before he returns to the majors.
