THE HOTTEST TRENDS IN SWIMWEAR

- Story by Rod Stafford Hagwood | Photos by Jim Rassol

It’s Miami Swim Week again, where swimsuits and resortwear for 2019 are shown in venues throughout Miami Beach.

Thousands of manufacturers, buyers, designers, stylists, models, media — and the new darling of any fashion event — “social media influencers” go to catwalk capers, product launches, nightclub parties, designer presentations and pop-up shops.

People are drawn from all over the globe, because Miami Swim Week is the largest swimwear event in the world. Because of that, we can get a good idea of the trends that you will see when these styles hit retail racks next spring. Here are some of the new trends we’re already beginning to see on the runways and in the trade shows.

Minimalist maillots and athletic-inspired swimsuits with high hip bottoms (even tiny bikini bottoms might be paired with a supportive long-sleeve top, bandeau or a rash guard)

Nude-colored swimsuits and coverups

Animal prints, especially leopard spots

Swimsuit tops with the ties in the front instead of the back

Ruffles on swimsuits and coverups

Softer fabrics and seamless construction for maximum comfort

Braided and laser-cut detailing

Accessories include bucket hats, basket bags, big hoop earrings and bandannas for apres-swim hair.

For men, look for swim shorts (around mid-thigh) in preppy prints. Boardshorts are popular (should fall 1 to 2 inches above knee), especially in tropical prints and bold colors.
