Lauderhill officer shoots robbery suspect, police say

LAUDERHILL A Lauderhill officer shot a robbery suspect Sunday around 10 a.m., an hour after getting an alert that the man had robbed a gas station in neighborin­g Sunrise, a police official said.

The suspect was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he is in stable condition.

The officer, who the department is not yet naming, was placed on administra­tive leave following protocol, Lt. Michael Santiago said.

Crime scene technician­s with the Broward Sheriff’s Office collected evidence Sunday behind yellow crime scene tape at Inverness Plaza, just across from Lauderhill City Hall, in the 5600 block of Oakland Park Blvd.

FDLE investigat­ors will investigat­e the shooting, Santiago said.

Scant details Sunday.

Santiago could not say how many shots were fired or whether the suspect was armed. He was not authorized to release the names of the officer or the man he shot, he said.

Here’s what we do know: Before 9 a.m., the Sunrise Police Department got a 911 call about a robbery at the Valero gas station at 6000 West Oakland Park Blvd., just a few blocks from where the were available suspect said.

“Our units came into contact with the suspect in the alley behind this [shopping center],” Santiago said. “At that point, the shooting happened.”

The officer involved in the shooting is not a rookie, Santiago said.

“He’s been on the force 12 years,” he said.

Police union spokesman John Puleo confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting was a veteran with the agency.

“He’s nervous, as expected,” Puleo said, declining further comment.
